Popham Air Racing Weekend
When? 8 - 9 August Where? Popham Airfield |
Message from the Chairman/Clerk of the Course..
The Grosvenor Trophy Race
The SBAC Trophy Race
No doubt you will be receiving your Supplementary Regulations for this event shortly, so can I just remind you of the additional considerations for this race and a request for you to confirm your race entry early.
1) Firstly, if you are intending racing in the Kings Cup Air Race at Shobdon, make sure you qualify for entry. Having lost the Enniskillen weekend due to weather I would hate to see you lose out on our premier non-championship race of the year.
2) The Popham Race will be covered by the editorial team from the LAA over the weekend so this is your chance to have your name in lights in the press
3) There is a free bus ride from the airfield to the Hotel and back on a genuine London Routemaster bus, courtesy of Chris Cunningham
4) The Basingstoke Hilton (15 minutes from the airfield) has arranged special rates for us if you have not already booked.
5) The Saturday Dinner will include Airfield Guests, our two LAA editorial visitors and an after dinner presentation by Steve Hutt FASVIG Program Co-ordinator
6) We are also expecting some observations by the Farnborough Airshow Team (FI2016)..where options are still not yet closed on the Queens Cup..
7) A reminder that camping is also possible at Popham as some did last year.. make your intentions known to the airfield.
Let’s once again keep our fingers crossed for some decent weather.
See you at EGHP

Shobdon Air Racing Weekend
When? 29 - 30 August Where? Shobdon Aerodrome |
The Shobdon air racing and King's Cup weekend.
This is one of the key events of the season as racers compete for the historic and esteemed King's Cup. This is the oldest handicapped race in the world and was first contested in 1922. On Saturday, the racers compete for the Steward's Cup. The weekend will be enhanced as the races will have a commentary provided by Paddy Carpenter, author, director and beardy weirdy.
Entry is restricted to British and Commonwealth citizens who must have completed, without exclusion for an endorsable offence the Steward’s Cup on 29 August 2015. In addition both pilot and aircraft, though not necessarily together, must have completed at least two other preliminary Championship races held over a previous race weekend during the 2015 season.
King's Cup Race
The airfield has the usual hook-ups, and pitches for tents although all the caravans are booked, and these are all becoming increasingly popular with racers. We suggest you get your bids for static caravans in sooner rather than later.
The following hotels, in order of distance from the airfield, have accommodation:
Airfield gabrielle.nisbet@live.co.uk
The Corners Inn 01568 708385
Gable Croft B&B 01568 708009
The Talbot 01568 616347

The Corners Inn has availability 9 rooms and has availability as of 14 Jan 15. Ask to speak to Sue and mention the club. This is peak wedding season, and rooms can be snapped up very quickly once invitations hit the coconut fibre doormat so members are strongly urged to book as soon as possible. It's also the Bank Holiday weekend so they will only accept bookings of 2 nights or more. They have also offered race goers the opportunity to stay for the Monday night at half price if they would like to make a long weekend of it.

Alderney Air Racing Weekend
When? 26 - 27 September Where? Alderney Airport |
The Alderney air racing weekend.
There is to be another event taking place on Alderney this weekend, so if you're expecting to go over the weekend, you are stongly advised to book your accommodation early. Ralph's letter gives more detail.
You're also asked to complete the usual registration form required for the Channel Islands airspace, which can be found here
Practice starts at 1145 on the Saturday, with the race being at 1530. On Sunday we'll be racing for the Schneider Trophy at 1200. The public and GA enthusiasts are always welcome and entrance is free - so come and say hello!
This is one venue where members book their own favourite accommodation and the Social Sec gets a relatively easy ride. We'll be looking to the inestimable Ralph to organise the Saturday night dinner. Friday night will be DIY but the Thai meal last year was very popular.
