British Air Racing Champion 2017
It doesn't seem 2 minutes since we were lauding Dominic Crossan for his second King's Cup win. Now we congratulate on him on another fine achievement. He has become the British Air Racing Champion of 2017. The announcement came after some long and nerve wracking calculations after the final race at Beccles where many of the contenders fought 2 close run races.
King's Cup Winner 2017
Congratulations once again to Dominic Crossan, Race 47, who's won the King's Cup at Shobdon for the second year in succession. This year he won with Guy Hook in the left hand seat. Dom is one of a small number of pilots who've won the trophy more than once, and there can be few, if any, who have been part of a winning three years in a row; in 2015 Dom himself was in the navigator's seat with Roger Scholes as P1.
Dom and Guy also won the Steward's Cup on the Saturday!

Fred Marsh Obituary
The death of Fred Marsh on Friday 27th October at the age of 92 has been announced.
Fred Marsh was widely known in sporting and general aviation circles and had made a significant and sustained contribution to aviation as well as being a member of the Royal Aero Club for more than 50 years, serving as Chairman in 1996-1997 and appointed as one of the Vice Presidents in 1998. He also served as the UK Vice President to the Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI) and was founder and first President of Europe Air Sports in 1988, which Fred instigated due to concern about the potentially damaging impact of pan-European aviation regulations on air sport activities. Europe Air Sports now represents some 680,000 aviators and continues to actively fulfil Fred’s original remit.
He began Air Racing in 1964 and was a founder and Chairman of the Formula Air Racing Association and was British Air Racing Champion for 1972 and twice Winner of the Duke of Edinburgh Formula One Trophy. Fred attributed the hand – foot – eye coordination essential for flying and racing to his apprenticeship in a bakery, where one of his jobs was operating a machine which stuffed jam into doughnuts.
During his time in the RAeC Fred founded the Royal Aero Club Trust, serving as Vice President and was a former Chairman. The RAeCT looks after the RAeC Memorabilia and Archives and which has provided tens of thousands of pounds in bursaries to support the training and development of aspiring young aviators.
Fred received recognition from the Honourable Company of Air Pilots in 2016, when they awarded him with their ‘Sword of Honour’, awarded for an making an ‘outstanding contribution to General Aviation’. In 2009, Fred wrote to Her Majesty The Queen mentioning “that it was a shame that we did not possess a trophy bearing her name”. After a humorous exchange of correspondence with the Keeper of the Privy Purse, he received a further letter proposing the supply of a beautiful piece of 18th century Irish silver, to be called “The Queen’s Cup for Air Racing".

The 3Rs Supporting Others
Whilst we were at Shobdon we were very happy to support the Jon Egging Trust The Jon Egging Trust was set up in memory of Red Arrows pilot Jon Egging who tragically lost his life at the Bournemouth Air Festival. Jon was passionate about inspiring young people through his love of flying. Between us all we raised £560 which was presented to Sue Byatt of the Trust.
Dave & Karen Gillespie win!
Dave and Karen did great in the EAA Airventure Cup race with their Eagle as Race Number 54. First in Class. Dave tells us he was proud to fly the RAeCRRRA decal on their nose and have been getting getting lots of questions and interest in the club. Well done you two!
Dave & Karen Gillespie race the Airventure Cup 2017

This year they are travelling from from the Spruce Creek Fly In Florida (7FL6) to Mt Vernon, Illinois to start the 500 mile EAA Airventure Cup air race on Sunday. 23 July 2017. They are doing so in their Christen Eagle II, and have decorated the plane with their old race number and 3Rs stickers.

Adventures in Abbeville
Abbeville is always a favourite with us 3Rs folks and this year was no different. We had 11 racers entered, we had the 215 champion, Bob Ellis and his wife Jill and John Bate stop by for the Friday night before heading off for a tour around France.
Sherburn News
Over the weekend of the 24th and 25th of June, the third race weekend of the Royal Aero Club 3R’s racing season took place at Sherburn in Elmet Airfield.
We were very honoured to have Raymond Davies present Saturday’s Royal Aero Club Paul Walker Trophy to the winners. Raymond was part of 192 Squadron and Viceroy of India HQ and presented the large cup to winner, Dave Moorman, Smaller cups and salvers were presented to 2nd place Martin Gosling flying solo in a Robin DR400, and to 3rd place pilot Dominic Crossan and his Navigator Guy Hook flying an RV 6. This is the first time this season that Dave raced without a navigator, obviously the way forward!
The Ginger Lacey Trophy for the Sunday’s race was presented by Dale Petty, Chairman of Sherburn in Elmet Aero Club and was won by first season racers Nick Kieswetter and his Navigator wife Gaynor Kieswetter in an RV6A with a race speed of 161.10 Knots. In 2nd place were John Kelsall and his Navigator Ian Scarborough in an RV7 and in 3rd place Dave Moorman flying solo in his CAP10B.
